Description

On the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge quarter from the America the Beautiful series, VDDR-015 displays medium spread to the east, manifesting as extra blades of grass to the right end of the upper grass strip. The Bombay Hook design features a Great Blue Heron, and die stage progression has been documented across three stages. Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state. Stage B reaches early-mid die state with a die break at the upper beak of the Great Blue Heron, while the obverse advances to LDS. Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. The grass-area doubling is diagnostically useful because the clean horizontal lines of the grass strip provide a clear canvas against which the eastward spread becomes visible. The Stage B beak break on the Great Blue Heron provides a memorable die-state marker, easily located without high magnification.
