2015 (P) Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-024

Description

Wexler Variety ID 2015-P 25¢ DE WDDR-024 marks a doubled die reverse variety documented on the 2015-P Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge Quarter. The Bombay Hook reverse by Joel Iskowitz presents a naturalistic tableau of a great blue heron amid the salt marshes of Delaware Bay — a design whose fine organic lines and detailed lettering have proven productive for doubled die variety discoveries throughout the die pool. WDDR-024 represents a die that carried measurable hub displacement sufficient to meet the attribution threshold for inclusion in the Wexler catalog, distinguishing genuine hub doubling from die deterioration doubling or machine doubling that might superficially mimic it. The distinction matters: genuine doubled dies result from multiple hub impressions on the working die during manufacture, while machine doubling is a strike-related phenomenon that produces flat, shelf-like secondary images without true design depth. Only the former qualifies for DDR attribution. The America the Beautiful program (2010-2021) produced five designs per year through 2020 (one in 2021) across both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition at 5.67 grams at the Philadelphia Mint, the 2015-P Bombay Hook Quarter rewards patient examination at 7x to 10x magnification, particularly on the heron's anatomical outlines and the reverse inscriptions where hub displacement creates the most diagnostically accessible doubling patterns.
