Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2015-P 25-cent NY WDDR-002, this America the Beautiful Quarter variety was struck on the 2015 Philadelphia Mint Saratoga National Historical Park issue — the New York entry in the ATB program's sixth year, honoring the site of the pivotal 1777 Revolutionary War battle that secured French alliance for the American cause. Hub-doubling evidence on the reverse die manifests within the design's close-up of Burgoyne surrendering his sword to Gates, where the fine lines of the hands, sword hilt and lettering provide natural detection zones for secondary impressions left by a misaligned hubbing pass. For the 2015-P Saratoga issue, the design's complexity — with its hands, sword hilt, and inscriptions — created multiple opportunities for hub-doubling anomalies to manifest across different working dies sunk from the same or related working hubs. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler listing are currently known, placing primary attribution authority with the Wexler Team's documentation. Struck in the standard copper-nickel clad composition at 5.67 grams across a 24.26mm diameter, the 2015-P Saratoga Quarter was produced alongside four other ATB designs that year: Homestead (Nebraska), Kisatchie (Louisiana), Blue Ridge Parkway (North Carolina), and Bombay Hook (Delaware). The ATB program's 2010-2021 run produced an enormous number of doubled die varieties owing to the annual rotation of five new reverse designs, each requiring fresh master dies and working hubs that introduced new opportunities for alignment errors during the die-sinking process.
