2013 (P) Lincoln Shield Cent - Doubled Die Obverse VDDO-001

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as VDDO-001, this 2013 Philadelphia-struck Lincoln Shield cent exhibits strong extra thickness on the date numerals and lighter extra thickness on LIBERTY. The Lincoln Shield cent, introduced in 2010 with Lyndall Bass's Union shield reverse replacing the Lincoln Memorial, weighs 2.5 grams, measures 19.05 mm in diameter, and is composed of copper-plated zinc (99.2% zinc core with 0.8% copper plating). The die progressed through multiple documented stages: Stage A represents an early die state that remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows the obverse at early-to-mid die state with a light die crack developing along the upper left portion of the shield, and Stage C is a late die state also unconfirmed. The variety tracking codes UVC and DMR assignments remain pending (listed as UVC-???? and DMR-00?), indicating the variety is authenticated but awaits final catalog number assignment in the universal variety tracking system. The strong extra thickness on the date digits serves as the primary pickup point for cherry-pickers searching through rolls and bags, while the lighter LIBERTY doubling provides secondary confirmation. This variety belongs to the Lincoln Shield Cents 2010 to Date series, which has proven fertile ground for doubled die discoveries due to the intricate shield design with its horizontal and diagonal lines providing numerous reference points where doubling can manifest. The multiple die crack progression documented across stages provides information for die state collecting.
