2013 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-014

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, WDDO-014 of the 2013 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent presents moderate extra thickness on LIBERTY with notching on the lower right of RTY — a step-like displacement along the letter edges where the doubled image creates a jagged, staircase profile rather than smooth contours. This notching is a hallmark of hub doubling viewed at an angle where the spread creates incremental steps across curved or diagonal letter strokes. Diagnostic die markers provide a rich constellation for attribution: a die gouge dot appears above Lincoln's bowtie on the obverse, while a die crack runs along the left side of the top of the shield on the reverse, accompanied by die chips north of the U, R, and B in PLURIBUS. This cluster of reverse markers — a crack with associated chipping — traces progressive die deterioration that provides secondary confirmation independent of the doubling. The Lincoln Shield Cent, with Lyndall Bass's Union shield reverse introduced in 2010, remains in production, though individual working dies like the one producing WDDO-014 carry unique combinations of doubling characteristics and die markers distinguishing them within the catalog.
