Description

Philadelphia Mint production of the 2013 Lincoln Shield Cent yielded this doubled die obverse cataloged as WDDO-008 by the Wexler Team. The doubling presents as strong extra thickness on the date digits, with pronounced notches visible on both the upper and lower portions of the numeral 1 in the date. Additional lighter doubling appears on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Wexler Variety ID: 2013 1¢ WDDO-008. Die markers on the reverse include a die crack running along the top of the left side of the shield — a useful diagnostic for confirming attribution, since the specific reverse die paired with this doubled obverse would carry that crack through its working life. The Shield Cent reverse, introduced in 2010 as a permanent successor to the four 2009 Bicentennial designs, depicts a union shield with horizontal and vertical lines symbolizing the states united under the federal government. Eight WDDO varieties cataloged for a single year of Shield Cent production reflects the active community of attributors searching modern issues.
