Description

Strong extra thickness appears on the letters of LIBERTY, with lighter extra thickness on the date of this 2013 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent. On the obverse, die pitting can be found to the right of the bottom of the E in WE. On the reverse, a die crack runs along the top of the left side of the shield, a die chip sits at the top of the shield north of the first U in PLURIBUS, and a die gouge (dot) lies in the field to the right of the top tip of the shield south of the O in OF. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 2013P-1DO-005 and Wexler Variety ID 2013 1¢ WDDO-005, this variety documents hub doubling on Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at the Philadelphia Mint, the 2013 Shield Cent carries Lyndall Bass's union shield reverse introduced in 2010. Doubled die obverse varieties on Shield Cents are actively collected, and WDDO-005's strong LIBERTY spread makes it an accessible cherrypicking target in circulation finds.
