2013 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
Error
Description
Exhibiting both strong and subtle doubling characteristics, WDDO-004 on the 2013 Lincoln Shield Cent shows strong extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY combined with light extra thickness on the date and a close counterclockwise spread on WE TRUST. The Wexler Team documented this variety with its multi-zone doubling pattern — the variation in doubling intensity across different areas of the obverse suggests a hub misalignment where certain design regions fell closer to the pivot point of the offset while others experienced greater displacement. The counterclockwise rotational component visible on WE TRUST adds diagnostic specificity, as rotational doubling produces a characteristic arc-shaped spread pattern that differs from the linear spread of translational doubling. Die markers on the reverse include a die crack and small die chips running along the top of the left side of the shield — details that not only aid attribution but also indicate the die was experiencing early-stage structural deterioration. No significant obverse markers have been identified, and no cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known. The 2013 Lincoln Shield Cent was produced at Philadelphia during the fourth year of the Shield design, and four cataloged doubled die obverses for the date indicates a moderate variety count. The combination of strong LIBERTY doubling visible without extreme magnification and the more subtle date and motto doubling gives collectors multiple diagnostic features to examine when attributing this variety, making it accessible to both beginning and advanced variety researchers.
