Description
2013-P MD WDDR-007 is a doubled die reverse on the 2013-P Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine quarter (Maryland) in the America the Beautiful series, cataloged by the Wexler team. Strong extra thickness covers most of the reverse design. It stands out above all on the spray of both firework bursts, on the frames of the three windows right over the arch, and on the designer's initials. Wexler describes three stages of each die. Obverse Stage A has a gouge on the right inside of AMERICA's C, one beneath the right side of UNITED's N, and one before the chin. By Stage B the gouges under the N and before the chin have worn away, while the one in the C is weak but still there; new are a gouge under AMERICA's I, one touching the left side of QUARTER's A, and a strong flow line running SE off TRUST's U. Obverse Stage C matches Stage B. Reverse Stage A shows slight doubling from die deterioration in the upper firework spray. On Stage B that deterioration doubling is strong, and there is a curved crack at the center of the lower burst plus a gouge in the central window over the archway. On Stage C the crack at the center of the lower burst has become a die chip; another chip lies between the two sprays of the lower burst that point farthest SE, and a crack with a pre-die break depression sits on the left side of its two sprays that point farthest S. Alfonso Lopez submitted Stage A and Aaron Laramee Stages B and C. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler adds that on some Stage B coins the lowest firework sprays and the windows over the archway show strong eastward machine doubling; like the die deterioration doubling seen on most stages, it has nothing to do with the doubled die.
