2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
ErrorDescription
Fifth doubled die reverse cataloged by Wexler for the 2013 Philadelphia Mint Maryland America the Beautiful Quarter, WDDR-005 exhibits doubling spread to the south visible on the bottom of the arch, the bottom of the three windows above the arch, and along the roof line of Fort McHenry. Slight doubling also appears on the bottom right spray from the lower firework burst — a design element commemorating the fort's defense during the British bombardment of 1814 that inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner." The Wexler variety identification is 2013-P 25c MD WDDR-005, and no other cross-references are currently known. Die markers on both obverse and reverse are listed as none significant, meaning attribution relies primarily on the doubling characteristics themselves. The America the Beautiful Quarters program (2010-2021) issued five reverse designs annually honoring national parks and sites, and the Fort McHenry design's architectural detail — with its arched entryway, rows of windows, and firework bursts — provided multiple areas where hub doubling could manifest visually. Five documented doubled die reverses for this single date-mint-design combination reflects the intensity of modern variety research on ATB quarters. Hub doubling on the reverse occurs during die manufacture when the reverse hub impresses the working die with slight misalignment between successive impressions, transferring the doubled image to every coin struck from that die. Documented by the Wexler Team, this variety highlights how architectural reverse designs with strong geometric elements produce particularly identifiable doubling signatures.
