2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2013-P 25¢ MD WDDR-003 and cross-referenced as CONECA 6-R-VIII, this America the Beautiful Quarter from the Fort McHenry National Monument issue displays doubling spread to the north on the right half of the spray from the lower firework burst and the lower right half of the spray from the upper firework burst, along with doubling on the left underside of the flag. The CONECA Class VIII designation indicates Tilted Hub Doubling, where the working hub was angled relative to the working die during the secondary impression, producing a tilt-induced displacement that manifests differently across various design elements depending on their position relative to the tilt axis. The Fort McHenry reverse design — commemorating the 1814 bombardment that inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner" — features firework bursts and a waving flag, and the doubling on these dynamic, curved design elements creates particularly interesting visual effects as the extra image follows the contours of the sprays and flag folds. Obverse die markers include a vertical die gouge below the ear and a die gouge above the QU in QUARTER, while no significant reverse markers beyond the doubling itself have been documented. The America the Beautiful Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (8.33% nickel, 91.67% copper) weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter. The ATB Quarter Program (2010-2021) featured five national park or site designs annually, and the Fort McHenry issue's patriotic imagery makes varieties on this design particularly appealing to collectors who combine error and variety collecting with historical interest in the sites commemorated by the series.
