Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2013-P 25c MD WDDR-001, this America the Beautiful Quarter features a doubled die reverse on the 2013 Fort McHenry design from the Maryland issue. Doubling spread to the west is visible on the lower half of the bottom firework spray, and additional doubling shows on the left side of the three small windows above the arch — design elements specific to the Fort McHenry reverse depicting the star-shaped fort with a prominent archway entrance and celebratory fireworks bursting above the ramparts, commemorating the 1814 bombardment that inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner." The westward spread direction indicates the secondary hub impression was displaced to the west relative to the primary, causing the doubled image to appear on the left side of affected elements when viewed from the coin's face. Obverse die markers include die pitting inside the D of UNITED, two die gouges below and between the T and R of TRUST, a die gouge under the right side of the U in TRUST, and a die gouge above the A in DOLLAR. No significant reverse die markers beyond the doubling itself have been noted. The 2013-P Fort McHenry Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program (2010-2021), which featured five national park or site designs per year across 56 total issues. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition (8.33% nickel, 91.67% copper) weighing 5.67 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm, the ATB quarters share the standard Washington obverse used since the 1999 State Quarter program. As the first cataloged doubled die reverse for this specific design, WDDR-001 holds the primary position in the Fort McHenry variety catalog.
