Description

This second die marriage of the 2012P(SAC)-100DEO-001T trail die obverse appears on the 2012 Philadelphia-struck Native American Dollar in Position B, distinguishing it from the Position A die pair sharing the same catalog designation. The manganese-brass clad dollar weighs 8.1 grams, measures 26.5 mm in diameter, and features the golden-toned composition of 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, and 4% nickel introduced with the Sacagawea Dollar in 2000. At Stage "A" (early die state), the obverse shows no notable markers, while the reverse exhibits the characteristic "dimples" on the letters ICA in AMERICA, depressions that indicate ghost-like contact impressions transferred from another die or hub component. Jean Lee discovered this die, contributing it to the Trail Dies reference catalog. The Position B designation refers to the edge lettering orientation relative to the obverse, specifically the relationship between the date and motto incused on the coin's edge and the heads/tails alignment, a feature that allows collectors to identify which anvil die orientation was used during striking. Trail die varieties on modern dollar coins are less frequently encountered than on the prolific Lincoln cent series, partly because dollar coin production volumes are substantially lower and partly because fewer variety collectors focus on the larger denomination.
