2012 (P) Jefferson Nickel - P-5DER-009WST Trail Die Reverse

Description

On 2012P-5DER-009WST, a 2012 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel reverse, the trails cross the steps of Monticello, the nickel's counterpart of the wavy steps on Lincoln cents. TrailDies' code gives the date and mint, 5 for the nickel, DER for a reverse design extension, file 009, and WST for wavy steps with trails. Besides the stairs, lines come off the base of the window on the left side of the building. They run straight down the coin, at 180°. The coin TrailDies describes is at an early-to-middle die state with no markers noted on either side. George dePozsgay found the die. Like other trails, these are usually attributed to the die being polished with a rotary buff; some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
