Description
2012P-5DER-008T has trails leaving the bottom left edge of Monticello, the MONT in MONTICELLO and FIVE, all heading 200°, south-southwest, toward the lower left. The code TrailDies uses breaks down as 2012P (year and mint), 5 (a nickel), DER (reverse extension of the design), 008 and T. TrailDies' middle-die-state example has a small dot just left of the I in IN and a small gouge on top of the S in PLURIBUS. Tanaka (Mikee) Davis found it. Trails are most often linked to rotary polishing of the die, with a smaller following for the idea that the die moved against the hub.

- Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – a small die dot is seen to the left of the I of the word IN.
- Reverse is MDS – a small die gouge is seen on top of the S in PLURIBUS.
