2012 (P) Jefferson Nickel - P-5DER-002T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Trails on 2012P-5DER-002T run at 330°, north-northwest, from the U in PLURIBUS, the first U of UNUM, the left side of the Monticello building and the words FIVE CENTS. The number is built from the date and Philadelphia mint (2012P), the nickel's 5, DER (design extension, reverse), file 002 and the trails T. At the late die state described, the obverse has nothing recorded, while the reverse has a small gouge between the B and U of PLURIBUS and another above the IC of AMERICA. Monika Stacy found the die. Polishing is the main explanation offered for trails, specifically a rotary buff worked over the die; a few prefer the idea of the die moving against the hub.

• Reverse is LDS – a small die gouge is seen in between the BU of PLURIBUS. Another small die gouge is seen above the IC of AMERICA.
