2012 (P) Jefferson Nickel - P-5DEO-002T Trail Die Obverse

Description

2012P-5DEO-002T, TrailDies' second 2012 Philadelphia nickel obverse with trails, shows lines from IN, from the date and from the mint mark. They head 270°, west, so they extend to the left of each feature. The code breaks down as date and mint, 5 (five cents), DEO (design extension, obverse), 002 (file) and T (trails). Late in the die's life, as described, there is a gouge between the 1 and 2 of the date, while on the reverse die chips sit in the S of CENTS and in the final O of MONTICELLO. Tanaka (Mikee) Davis found it. Such lines are normally attributed to rotary polishing of the die, and less often to the die moving against the hub.

Die Markers

• Stage “C“, obverse is LDS – a die gouge is seen between the 1 and 2 digits of the date.
• Reverse is LDS – die chips are seen in the last O of MONTICELLO and the S of CENTS.
