2012 (P) Jefferson Nickel - P-5DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

On 2012P-5DEO-001T the trails start at three places, the L in LIBERTY, the date's first three digits and the mint mark, and all run at 270°, due west, toward the left edge. TrailDies' code: 2012P, a 2012 Philadelphia strike; 5, a nickel; DEO, the obverse design extension; 001, the file; T, the trail type. This obverse was paired with a reverse that has trails of its own, 2012P-5DER-006T. At the late die state described, a small break sits on top of the S in TRUST and a gouge lies above the E of UNITED on the reverse. Tanaka (Mikee) Davis found the pair. Polishing the die with a rotary tool is the generally accepted origin of trails, though some prefer die-on-hub movement as the cause.
