Description

Discovered by Tanaka (Mikee) Davis, the 2012P-5DEO-001T is a trail die obverse variety on the Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel. Trail die obverse varieties retain vestiges of a prior hub impression, producing faint secondary design traces on the obverse. Documented at Stage C, this variety has reached late die state, with the obverse showing a small die break on the top of the S of TRUST. The reverse is also at LDS, carrying a die gouge above the E in UNITED. The advanced late-die-state condition means these features are particularly pronounced, as the die has undergone significant wear and deterioration by this point in its production life. The die break at the S of TRUST, where material has begun to separate from the die surface, represents a more advanced form of deterioration than a crack, indicating the die was approaching the end of its useful life. The reverse die gouge above E in UNITED provides a secondary LDS diagnostic.

Die Markers

  • Stage “C“, obverse is LDS – a small die break is seen on the top of the S of TRUST
  • Reverse is LDS – a die gouge is seen above the E in UNITED.
