2011 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

Displaying very strong extra thickness on the date digits and LIBERTY with distinctive notches in the lower left corners of both digits and letters, the 2011 WDDO-009 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent ranks among the more visually prominent doubled die obverses in the Shield Cent series. The corner notching is a hallmark of certain doubling classes where the shifted impression creates a step-like discontinuity at letter and numeral extremities, visible under moderate magnification. The obverse carries a die crack running north-northwest from the front of the eyebrow through the forehead. The reverse shows a die crack along the left side of the top of the shield with die chips above the L and the first U in PLURIBUS. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2011 1-cent WDDO-009. The forehead crack on the obverse and the shield crack on the reverse together document progressive die fatigue on both sides of this die pair. Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse, introduced in 2010, provides new architectural elements where doubling manifests differently than on the Memorial reverse it replaced.
