2010P-10DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse
Error
Description
Representing a scarce denomination for trail die discoveries, the 2010P-10DEO-001T is a trail die obverse variety on the Philadelphia-minted Roosevelt Dime found by Jean Lee and cataloged by Trail Dies. Trail die errors on the dime denomination are less frequently documented than on cents, making this variety particularly notable within the Roosevelt Dime series. The Roosevelt Dime, designed by John R. Sinnock and in continuous production since 1946, was struck in copper-nickel clad composition (2.27 grams, 17.91 mm diameter) at the Philadelphia Mint. The clad dime consists of a pure copper core bonded between outer layers of cupronickel (75% copper, 25% nickel), and the 2010 issue continues the standard torch, olive branch, and oak branch reverse design unchanged since the series' inception. Die markers place this variety at Stage B with the obverse at Mid Die State showing a diagonal die scratch in the L of LIBERTY, while the reverse at MDS exhibits die damage visible between the olive branch and the torch — two features in the central reverse field that serve as the primary authentication diagnostics. The diagonal scratch through the L of LIBERTY is particularly useful for quick sorting, as it can be detected with minimal magnification. Jean Lee, who discovered this variety, is a prolific trail die researcher credited with finding numerous examples across multiple denominations, contributing significantly to the expansion of the Trail Dies catalog through systematic examination of modern coinage issues.
