2010P-1DER-009T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Identified by Jason Dick and recorded in the Trail Dies reference catalog, the 2010P-1DER-009T is the ninth cataloged trail die reverse variety for the 2010 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent — the inaugural year of the Shield reverse design. Trail die reverse varieties display a faint secondary impression of the reverse design offset from the primary, created when the die receives an unintended secondary contact during the die manufacturing or press setup process, producing ghost-like duplicate elements of the Union shield design on struck coins. Die marker documentation identifies Stage "B" at mid-die-state (MDS) with diagnostics on both sides: the obverse shows a die crack running from Lincoln's brow through the forehead and into the hairline, while the reverse exhibits two small die dents to the left of the O in ONE. The obverse die crack system tracing from the brow through the forehead into the hairline documents a progressive structural failure through the portrait's most prominent high-relief features — an area where repeated striking concentrates mechanical stress. The Lincoln Shield Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2010 in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The Shield reverse, designed by Lyndall Bass, features a Union shield with thirteen vertical stripes representing the original colonies, beneath a scroll bearing ONE CENT. As the first year of Shield reverse production, 2010 saw the introduction of new reverse die hubs, and the nine cataloged trail die reverses for this date suggest trail die events occurred with some regularity during the initial production setup of the new design.
