Trail dies occur when a coin receives a partial or offset secondary strike from an adjacent die in a multi-die press, leaving a faint ghost-like impression of design elements that trail across the coin's surface — distinct from doubled dies, which originate during die manufacture rather than during striking. Die stage documentation places this variety at Stage A with both obverse and reverse in Early Die State (EDS), with no significant die markers noted on either side. The absence of die markers in EDS is typical, as the die had not yet accumulated the chips, gouges, and scratches that develop during extended use and serve as attribution fingerprints on later die states.
