2010 (P) Lincoln Shield Cent - P-1DER-001T Trail Die Reverse

Description

On 2010P-1DER-001T every letter of STATES has trails, as does the ERI of AMERICA, and they point due north at 000°, straight up toward the top of the coin. The number breaks into 2010 and P for date and mint, a 1 for the cent, DER marking a reverse trail die, file 001 and T. TrailDies' coin is middle die state. On the obverse a small gouge sits below the I of LIBERTY and a crack along the back of Lincoln's head ends in a chip beneath the E of WE; on the reverse there is a small chip on the left of ONE's O and a small gouge below the O of OF. David Mulberry of Florida found the die. The usual explanation is rotary polishing of the die; a smaller group attributes trails to the die moving against the hub.

Die Markers

• Stage “B “, obverse is MDS – the obverse is a doubled die. Notching can be seen on the top left corners of the letters RTY of LIBERTY. Extra thickness is seen on the left arm of the Y and the vertical components of the letters in LIBERTY. A small die gouge is seen under the I of LIBERTY. A die crack is seen on the backside of Lincoln’s head, terminating in a die chip under the E of WE.
• Reverse is MDS – A small die chip is located on the left side of the O in ONE. A small die gouge is located under the O in OF.
