2010 (P) Lincoln Shield Cent - P-1DEO-010T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Trails come from the bottom of the date on 2010P-1DEO-010T and run at 200°, south-southwest. The die is paired with the reverse trail die 2010P-1DER-011T, whose light trails leave the MERI of AMERICA and, faintly, the middle bar of the F in OF at 120°. In the number, 2010P gives the year and Philadelphia mint, 1 the cent, DEO an obverse design extension, 010 the file and T the trails. The early-die-state coin has very faint abrasion marks in front of Lincoln's mouth and, on the reverse, a small cluster of gouges near the designer's initials, LB. Lynn Morace found it. Trails are usually blamed on polishing of the die with a rotary buff, and by some on the die moving against the hub.
