Description

Coinciding with the debut of Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse design, this 2010 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Cent trail die obverse documents a ghost impression phenomenon on a first-year Shield Cent. Trail dies occur when a previously struck coin leaves a faint residual impression on the die surface that transfers onto subsequent coins, creating a subtle doubled appearance distinct from hub-related doubling. The obverse of the Lincoln Cent, bearing Victor David Brenner's portrait of Abraham Lincoln, is where this trail die manifests its ghostlike secondary image. This variety was documented in Stage B with both obverse and reverse in Mid-Die State. Albert Neils is credited with the discovery of this trail die variety. As the seventh cataloged trail die obverse for 2010 Philadelphia Cents, this entry demonstrates that trail die events continued into the Shield Cent era, where the new reverse design introduced fresh die manufacturing parameters but the fundamental striking mechanics that produce trail die impressions remained unchanged.
