2009 (P) Puerto Rico Quarter - P(PR)-25DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

On 2009P(PR)-25DEO-001T PR is the Puerto Rico design tag, not a proof mark: this is a 2009 Philadelphia quarter (25), the obverse in TrailDies' design extension class (DEO), filed as 001 with the trail letter T. Trails mixed with die scratches come off the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM and the C and A of AMERICA, heading 190°, just west of due south. TrailDies traces three late stages. Stage C has a large crack in the bottom of Washington's bust, a chip at the end of his hair ribbon, and small gouges between the hibiscus and the rim on the reverse. By stage D cracks run through DO of DOLLAR to the rim and from the rim through AR; at stage E the AR crack has become a retained break. Steven Bernatowicz found it. Polishing the die with a rotary buff is the explanation offered most often for trails, with die-against-hub movement as the alternative.
