2009 (P) Lincoln Cent - Formative Years - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-020

Description

2009 FY WDDO-020 is a doubled die obverse on a 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial cent with the Formative Years reverse, cataloged by the Wexler team. Light extra thickness shows on the date and on the details of the hair and beard. Obverse, Stage A: north of the L in LIBERTY, a small gouge. Stage B: under the D of GOD, a small gouge (dot); a crack crossing the hair at the upper back of the head from SW to NE and stopping south of that D; a second crack, beginning beneath the end of the first and also running SW to NE, through the hair on top of the head to a point below the W in WE; and a crack heading NNW through the eyebrow and on into the forehead. Stages C and D: Wexler gives each as unchanged from the stage before. Reverse, Stage A: right of the F in OF, near its top, a gouge; along the bottom of the left boot, a pre-die crack depression running ENE to WSW. Stage B: from the N of ONE, at its top left, a short crack going NE; the boot depression is now a crack that crosses the boot's bottom ENE to WSW and then bends SSW to reach the upper right of the R in PLURIBUS; a crack down the upper left arm; a short crack linking the E and D of UNITED at their bases; and a pre-die chip depression on the left shoulder. Stage C: the crack at the base of UNITED's E and D has extended through the lower D; over the C in AMERICA, a short vertical gouge; from the middle of the log's right end, a crack going NE into the field; on the left shoulder, a small chip where the pre-die chip depression had been; left of the C in CLV, a small gouge; and a light crack from the rim to the upper right of the U in UNITED. Stage D: that rim crack at the U has become very heavy and continues down the U's right side into the field, ending close to the lower left of the O in ONE. David C.
