2009 (P) Lincoln Cent - Formative Years - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

2009 FY WDDO-009 is a doubled die obverse on a 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial cent with the Formative Years reverse, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY's letters, the lower hair and the beard details show strong extra thickness, and Wexler notes there is no doubling on the date. Wexler lists four stages. Obverse Stage A: a series of diagonal scratches over LIBERTY's Y; faded diagonal scratches left of the upper part of the 2 in the date; a light vertical scratch right of TRUST's first T; and diagonal and horizontal scratches on Lincoln's jacket behind the bowtie. Stage B adds a SSW-to-NNE scratch over the left side of LIBERTY's Y; short, strong scratches reaching ESE from just above the nose tip and from the upper lip's top, just under the nose; a short crack heading SSW from the lower left of LIBERTY's B; a pre-die crack depression through the hair just under WE that arcs from WNW to ESE and then ENE, with a second pre-die crack depression branching off it and running SSW through the hair; and a crack heading NNW from the eyebrow's back into the forehead. On Stage C, a small gouge (dot) shows left of the base of GOD's O; the hair depressions have become cracks; a long crack branches NE to SW through the hair high on the back of the head; and a crack crosses the eyebrow toward the WNW, then bends NW into the forehead and meets the crack from the eyebrow's back there. Stage D adds a small die chip in the hair above the crack, well south of GOD's O. On the reverse, Stage A has a series of diagonal scratches behind Lincoln's head; many horizontal scratches through and below ONE CENT; several horizontal scratches over the right side of the mallet head; and light diagonal scratches in the field behind Lincoln's right boot. Stage B adds a scratch heading northeast from the shirt's lower back, above the cloth sticking out from the back of the pants; a scratch heading NE from the collar behind the head; and an ENE-to-WSW pre-die crack depression across the lower left boot. Stage C adds a small gouge (dot) under UNITED's U; on ONE, short cracks heading ENE from the top of the O, north from the upper left and NNE from the upper right of the N, and NE from the upper right of the E; on CENT, a short crack heading NNW from the upper left of the C and one heading NE from the upper right of the N; a pre-die crack depression down the left shoulder; two roughly parallel cracks down the rolled-up left sleeve, the right one continuing down the upper arm and ending left of the elbow; a crack heading SSW from the right log end's center that curves SW into the grass; and a short crack reaching south into the field under the front of the left boot. On Stage D there is a short, strong diagonal gouge in the field over Lincoln's head and a gouge in the field right of the upper left arm, and the crack under the left boot has lengthened, passing through the R in PLURIBUS on its way to the rim.
