2009 (P) Lincoln Cent - Formative Years - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-016

Description

2009 FY WDDO-016 is a doubled die obverse on a 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial cent with the Formative Years reverse, cataloged by the Wexler team. Strong extra thickness shows on the date, the beard, the lower part of the hair and LIBERTY, and the upper left of the Y in LIBERTY has a strong notch. At Stage A the obverse has two pre-die crack depressions: one runs NW through the eyebrow, the other crosses the forehead's upper front from NW to SE. Stage B: from the rim near 8:00, a crack arcs over toward the V of V.D.B. (the designer's initials); two separate cracks run SW to NE across the hair at the head's upper back, the upper one with a branch that dips south and then curves NE; in the hair on top of the head, just under WE, a crack runs SE before curving NE; the eyebrow crack now runs NW into the forehead, with a small chip just over the eyebrow; another crack crosses the forehead's upper front from NW to SE; and a small chip sits on the lapel, right of the Y in LIBERTY at its bottom. Stage C: from the point where the rim crack meets the bottom of the bust, a long crack that Wexler calls potentially terminal runs NE through the shoulder, and a light crack crosses the bowtie from ENE to WSW before curving SW. Stage D: a large chip has formed in the hair on the upper crack south of the D in GOD, and a crack follows the front of the nose at its lower end. Reverse, Stage A: two horizontal scratches through the tops of NUM in UNUM, and a pre-die crack depression across the left shoulder. Stage B: a crack north from the top of the second S in STATES to the rim; a chip on the left shoulder; a crack down the upper left arm; small chips on the center left of the E and the lower left of the N in CENT; a pre-die chip depression on the O in ONE, at its top; a chip on the mallet handle just over the mallet head; a pre-die crack depression across the lower left boot; a crack down the lower right boot; and a short crack linking the E and D of UNITED at their bases. Stage C: Wexler gives it as the same as Stage A. Stage D: a scratch goes north from the O in OF, at its top, to the rim.
