2009 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-007

Description

The 2009-P Lincoln Cent Formative Years DDO-007, cataloged by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-2699 and DMR-066, shows strong extra thickness on LIBERTY, the lower hair, the beard, and the date. The upper right letters of the date display notching — a form of doubling where the letter edges appear stepped or notched rather than smoothly rounded. Three die stages are recognized. Stage A is the early die state (EDS). Stage B is the middle die state (MDS). Stage C is the late die state (LDS). The 2009 Formative Years design by Charles Vickers depicts a young Abraham Lincoln seated on a log while reading a book, referencing his self-education in Indiana between 1816 and 1830. The 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial cents were issued in four reverse designs to mark the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The Formative Years reverse replaced the long-running Memorial design and was struck only for 2009, making doubled die varieties from this single-year design particularly collectible within the Lincoln Cent series.
