Description

On the Formative Years in Indiana reverse design of the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cent — one of four special reverses issued in the coin's centennial year — this obverse doubled die produces extra thickness on LIBERTY, the lower hair, and the beard of Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait. The variety is catalogued by VarietyVista with permanent markers UVC-2698 and DMR-065. Stage A shows the obverse at early die state, with die scratches running north from the right log end. Stage B brings the obverse to early mid die state, marked by a light die crack across the lower left boot. Stage C (mid die state) and Stage D (late die state) remain unconfirmed. The 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial series saw unusually intense scrutiny from variety specialists eager to document the new dies. Extra thickness on portrait legends and hair details is characteristic of distorted hub doubling, which occurs when the hub and die are misaligned during successive impressions. The copper-plated zinc cents of 2009 were produced in modest quantities compared to Memorial cent years, adding numismatic significance to variety finds.
