Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2009 1¢ EC WDDO-001 and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-001, this Lincoln Bicentennial Cent presents a subtly rotated doubling of one cheek line visible to the left of the bottom of Lincoln’s nose — a delicate facial feature duplication requiring careful examination under magnification to distinguish from normal die wear. The attribution includes estimated values of AU = $5, MS60 = $10, MS63 = $15, and MS65 = $25, making this the highest-valued doubled die among the 2009 Early Childhood varieties listed. As WDDO-001, it holds the primary obverse doubled die catalog position for the date, typically indicating either the first discovered or the most prominent variety. Obverse die markers include a die crack running south-southwest to north-northeast in the hair at the back of the head with a die chip near the upper end, another die crack running southwest to northeast through the hair near the top of the head, a die crack running northwest from the eyebrow, and a die crack running southeast to northwest through the front of the forehead — an extensive network of progressive die cracks documenting advanced structural failure across Lincoln’s portrait area.
