Description

This Position A counterpart to the Position B trail die listing documents the same reverse phenomenon on a 2008 Philadelphia John Quincy Adams Presidential dollar, attributed by Trail Dies. Trail die impressions result from physical contact between dies during storage or die-setting, transferring ghost images onto a die's working surface. The die stages match the Position B sibling: Stage B at mid-die state shows a small die gouge between the 25 of 1825 on the obverse and a field gouge right of the T in STATES on the reverse. Stage C, reported by William Glenn, develops a die crack under the CY of QUINCY at late-mid die state with the field gouge persisting. Position A orientation distinguishes this from the Position B version, as Presidential dollars had two possible die orientations affecting edge lettering alignment. Acquiring both positions provides a complete record of this trail die interaction.

Die Markers

  • Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – small die gouge between the 25 of 1825.
  • Reverse is MDS – die gouge in the field to the right of the T of STATES.
  • Stage “C”, obverse is LMDS – die crack in Adam’s head under the CY of QUINCY.
  • Reverse is LMDS – die gouge still in the field.
