2008 (P) Presidential Dollar - John Quincy Adams, Position A - P(JQA)-100DER-001T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Light trails come off the ES of STATES and the torch held by the Statue of Liberty on 2008P(JQA)-100DER-001T, the reverse of a John Quincy Adams Presidential dollar, pointing 030°, north-northeast. In TrailDies' reading, 2008P is date and mint, (JQA) is Adams, 100 is the dollar and DER the reverse, while 001 numbers the file and T flags trails. Mary Fantauzzo of New York found it. At stage B the obverse has a small gouge between the 2 and 5 of 1825 and the reverse a gouge in the field right of the T of STATES; by stage C, reported by William Glenn, a crack has formed in Adams' head under the CY of QUINCY and the reverse gouge remains. Die polishing with a rotary buff is the usual explanation for trails, although some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.

• Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – small die gouge between the 25 of 1825.
• Reverse is MDS – die gouge in the field to the right of the T of STATES.
• Stage “C”, obverse is LMDS – die crack in Adam’s head under the CY of QUINCY.
• Reverse is LMDS – die gouge still in the field.
