Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2008-P $1 JQA WDDO-001, this is a doubled die obverse on the 2008-P John Quincy Adams Presidential Dollar. The Presidential Dollar program, which launched in 2007 with Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Madison, continued in 2008 with four more presidents including John Quincy Adams — the sixth president who served from 1825 to 1829 and was the only president's son to also hold the office until George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush over 150 years later. The obverse portrait of Adams for this issue was designed to capture his likeness during his presidential years, and the hub doubling documented under WDDO-001 affects elements of this unique portrait and surrounding inscriptions. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler designation have been established. The Presidential Dollar was struck in manganese brass clad composition — a distinctive golden-colored alloy with outer layers of 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, and 4% nickel — weighing 8.1 grams with a diameter of 26.5 mm. Unlike most U.S. coins, the Presidential Dollar carries a lettered edge rather than a reeded or plain edge, with the date, mintmark, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST incused into the edge — a design feature that occasionally produced its own variety of edge lettering errors. The Philadelphia Mint's 2008 production generated the working dies from which this WDDO-001 hub doubling originated.
