Description

2008P(MVB)-100DEO-001T, a Martin Van Buren Presidential dollar obverse, has light trails off the top edges of the letters in his name and from the top lock of hair. They point 330°, north-northwest. The number decodes as 2008 and P for Philadelphia, (MVB) for Van Buren's initials and 100 for a dollar coin; DEO, 001 and T mean obverse design extension, file number and trails. TrailDies' example is a stage C, late-state coin with a small gouge left of the 8th and another in the bust above the 37; its reverse has no markers. Trails are widely blamed on rotary polishing of the die, though a minority attributes them to the die moving against the hub.

Die Markers

  • Stage “A”, obverse is EDS – small die dot on  Monroe’s forehead.
  • Reverse is EDS – None noted.
