2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Seventh in the Wexler Team's DDR catalog for the 2008 Philadelphia Mint New Mexico State Quarter, WDDR-007 adds to what has become one of the most prolific doubled die populations among all fifty state reverse designs. New Mexico's "Land of Enchantment" quarter, designed by Don Everhart, entered circulation on April 7, 2008, and the Philadelphia Mint's massive production volume meant numerous die pairs were pressed into service, each representing a potential source of hub doubling if alignment shifted during die preparation. The Zia sun symbol at the center of the reverse — four groups of four rays emanating from a central circle — creates a design with strong rotational symmetry, meaning that different classes of hub doubling (spread, rotational, distorted) each produce characteristic disruptions to the symbol's geometry.
