2008 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Submitted by Edward Stewart and attributed by the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 2008-P 25¢ NM WDDO-004), this Philadelphia New Mexico State Quarter shows doubling on the underside of Washington's earlobe. Supplementary obverse markers: die chip on underside of center horizontal bar of E in LIBERTY, die crack across base of bust through designer's initials, die chips near left point of bust. Reverse markers: die scratch SW/NE above left side of state outline, die gouge connecting bottom right of M in MEXICO to top of second 1 in 1912, die chip on top right of reverse design. The 2008 State Quarter program was part of the 50 State Quarters initiative (1999-2008), which generated enormous public interest and produced many doubled die discoveries as millions of collectors examined fresh rolls. New Mexico became the 47th state in 1912, and its quarter features the Zia sun symbol over a topographic outline.
