Description

New Mexico's Zia Pueblo sun symbol provides the diagnostic focus for this eighth doubled die reverse for the 2008 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter, showing a medium spread to the west as an extra partial upright of the lower middle upright of the Zia symbol. The Zia — a sacred sun sign consisting of four groups of rays extending from a central circle — dominates the New Mexico reverse design, and doubling on one of its radiating uprights creates a visible extra element within this geometric motif. Westward displacement indicates the hub shifted left between impressions, and the lower middle upright's position near the symbol's center concentrates the visible effect. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-2145 and DMR-012, the variety is tracked across three die states: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in early die state, Stage B at mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). State Quarters from the 50 State Quarters Program generated extensive variety research due to their unique reverse designs, and doubled dies on the Zia symbol are among the more visually distinctive discoveries from the program's final year of 2008.
