2008 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004
Error
Description
Following DDR-003 on the same design, DDR-004 also targets the Zia Pueblo sun symbol on the 2008 Philadelphia Mint New Mexico State Quarter, showing medium eastward spread as an extra partial upright of the lower left arm. While both varieties affect the same design element in the same direction, the difference in spread magnitude — strong for DDR-003 versus medium for DDR-004 — confirms these originated from two separate dies with distinct hubbing misalignments. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1798 and DMR-008, Stage A documents the obverse and reverse both in early die state, with Stages B and C unconfirmed. The Zia sun symbol's geometric precision makes it an excellent diagnostic area for doubled dies, since any displacement of the straight-line uprights creates a clear parallel image. Having two documented DDR varieties affecting the same feature on the same date speaks to the consistency of the hubbing process — similar misalignment angles apparently occurred on multiple dies during production. New Mexico quarters were struck at both Philadelphia and Denver, and this pair of Philadelphia varieties adds to the overall DDR census for the program's final year.
