Description

Strong eastward spread on the 2008 Philadelphia Mint New Mexico State Quarter produces an extra partial upright on the lower left arm of the Zia Pueblo sun symbol — the central design element of New Mexico's reverse. The Zia sun symbol, sacred to the Zia Pueblo people and adopted as New Mexico's state emblem, features four groups of rays extending from a central circle, and the fine geometric lines of the uprights make hub doubling particularly visible. DDR-003 is tracked by VarietyVista as UVC-1779 and DMR-007, with Stage A showing both reverse and obverse in early die state, while Stages B and C remain unconfirmed. New Mexico was the fourth State Quarter issued in 2008, alongside Oklahoma, Alaska, Hawaii, and Arizona in the program's final year. The strong spread designation indicates the doubling is readily visible under moderate magnification, distinguishing DDR-003 from weaker varieties where the separation is marginal. State Quarter doubled dies attracted enormous collector interest during the program's 1999-2008 run, as the annually changing designs meant each year brought new reverses with new doubling possibilities.
