Description

Found by Jean Lee, this 2008 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent is the first cataloged trail die obverse for the 2008-D date. Trail lines appear from the TY of LIBERTY, Lincoln's collar, the mintmark, the date, and the TR of TRUST at 300 degrees offset, affecting multiple obverse elements across a broad arc. Cataloged by Trail Dies at Stage B (MDS): two die gouges to the right of the word WE on the obverse; no additional reverse markers noted. The wide trail line distribution across LIBERTY, collar, mintmark, date, and TRUST indicates broad-based displacement affecting most of the obverse. Composed of copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19.05 mm, the 2008-D was among the final Denver issues of Gasparro's Memorial reverse. As the first trail die obverse for this date, it represents the primary discovery for the 2008-D variety population.

Die Markers

  • Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – two die gouges are seen to the right of the word WE.
  • Reverse is MDS – none noted.
