2008-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Second DDR cataloged for the 2008 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDR-002 documents doubling on the lower right side of the 6th column to the left of the statue's knees — the final year this iconic reverse design would be produced before its 2009 replacement. Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse, which had been in continuous production since 1959, was reaching the end of its remarkable fifty-year run when this die was manufactured. Detailed die markers support attribution: on the obverse, a small die gouge sits midway between the bottoms of the D in GOD and the W in WE, with another small gouge above the hair southwest of the W in WE. The reverse carries a die gouge running north-northwest from the top of the C in AMERICA. These precisely documented marker positions allow collectors to confirm attribution even if the doubling itself is subtle.
