Description

This 2008 Denver Mint Alaska State Quarter is the first documented trail die reverse variety for the issue, cataloged as 2008D(AK)-25DER-001T. A trail die occurs when a previously struck coin remains in the striking chamber and leaves a faint ghost impression of its design on the next coin struck, transferring subtle design elements that do not belong. Found by Louis Fan. Both the obverse and reverse are in Late Early Die State with no additional die markers noted on either side. Attributed by Trail Dies. Alaska was the 49th state admitted to the Union and one of the final two State Quarters issued in 2008, making trail die varieties on this issue particularly notable as the long-running 50 State Quarters program neared its conclusion. The Alaska quarter reverse features a grizzly bear with a salmon, designed by Charles Vickers, and any ghost impressions from the trail die would appear superimposed on this distinctive design.

Die Markers

  • Stage "A", obverse is LEDS – none noted.
  • Reverse is LEDS – none noted.
