Description

First documented rim cud for the 1973 Denver Mint Kennedy Half Dollar, CU-50c-1973D-01 preserves a major die break where the rim section fractured and separated entirely from the die. When this happens, the void left by the missing die fragment fills with metal during each strike, creating a smooth, raised area at the coin's edge devoid of design detail. Kennedy Half Dollars of the early 1970s occupy a particular niche in collecting — the denomination had largely vanished from circulation by this era, with most examples saved by the public or distributed through Mint sets rather than spent as currency. Denver struck the 1973-D in copper-nickel clad composition, the standard since 1971 when the 40% silver content used from 1965 to 1970 was eliminated for business strikes. Rim cuds on Kennedy Halves are less commonly reported than on cents or nickels because the series received less circulation wear and fewer dies were consumed relative to smaller denominations.
