First documented rim cud for the 1973 Denver Mint Kennedy Half Dollar, CU-50c-1973D-01 records the loss of part of the die's rim gutter, which appears on the coin as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. Kennedy Half Dollars of the early 1970s occupy a particular niche in collecting — the denomination had largely vanished from circulation by this era, with most examples saved by the public or distributed through Mint sets rather than spent as currency. Denver struck the 1973-D in copper-nickel clad composition, the standard since 1971 when the 40% silver content used from 1965 to 1970 was eliminated for business strikes.
