1871 Indian Head Cent Shallow N FS-901
Error
Description
This 1871 Indian Head cent is the Shallow N reverse variety, designated FS-901. The Shallow N variety features a three-dimensionally shallow letter N in CENT that almost blends into the background field, along with straighter, T-shaped serifs on the letter E and larger notches in the lettering. By 1871, most Indian Head cents were struck with the newer Bold N reverse hub, making the Shallow N the scarcer variety for this date. The Shallow N reverse was carried over from the older hub design used in the late 1860s, and is recognized by both PCGS and NGC as a distinct collectible variety.
