Description

Cataloged as the primary doubled die obverse for the 2006-P Colorado state quarter, DDO-001 displays a medium spread to the south manifesting as an extra bottom earlobe on Washington's portrait. VarietyVista tracks this variety under die markers UVC-2109 and DMR-003, with three documented die stages. Stage A shows both the obverse and reverse in early die state. Stage B at mid-die state reveals several small die chips on the face affecting the eye, nose, lips, cheek, and chin, along with a die crack across the front of the bust, a die crack across the designer's initials, and a die chip above the 6 of the date. Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed. The extra earlobe is the primary pickup point for this variety and can be detected with relatively low magnification. Colorado quarters were issued as part of the popular 50 State Quarters program, and doubled dies on state quarter issues generated significant collector interest during the program's run. The facial die chips at Stage B provide useful secondary diagnostics when the doubling alone is insufficient for confident attribution.
