2006D-1DER-005T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Jean Lee and documented in the Trail Dies catalog, the 2006D-1DER-005T is a trail die reverse variety found on a 2006 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent. Trail die reverse varieties display a faint secondary reverse design impression offset from the primary, generated during die manufacture, setup, or test-strike procedures that produce an unintended secondary contact between the die and another surface. Die marker documentation identifies Stage B with the obverse at mid-die state (MDS) showing a die break on the first zero of the date and a small die crack connecting the two zeros in the date — progressive structural failures developing within the date numerals of the obverse die. The reverse is at MDS with a small die dot in bay 3 immediately above the left urn of the Lincoln Memorial’s architectural design. The die break on the first zero and the connecting crack between zeros document an emerging fracture system within the date area, where the thin die steel between adjacent recessed numerals created stress concentration points susceptible to cracking under repeated striking loads. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was designed by Frank Gasparro for the reverse and Victor David Brenner for the obverse, struck at the Denver Mint in 2006 in copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter.
