2006D-1DER-002T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Faint trail lines visible under the URI of PLURIBUS and under UNUM at an offset direction of 160 degrees distinguish this trail die reverse on a 2006-D Lincoln Memorial Cent, discovered by Jeremy Gardner of Kentucky. Trail dies result from a manufacturing mishap where the wrong hub briefly contacts a working die during production, leaving ghost-like impressions of offset design elements. Die markers for Stage B place both obverse and reverse in Mid-Die State: the obverse shows two small die gouges under the first zero in the date, while the reverse has a small die gouge in the lower triangle of the N in ONE. The 160-degree offset direction indicates the trail lines are displaced roughly south-southeast from their normal positions, placing the ghost lettering just below and slightly left of where E PLURIBUS UNUM normally appears. Cataloged by Trail Dies, this variety was struck at the Denver Mint during the final years of the Memorial Cent design, which would be retired after 2008. The Stage B designation confirms this die had already accumulated some wear by the time documented specimens were struck, and the die gouges on both sides serve as precise attribution markers that distinguish this trail die from other varieties on the 2006-D cent.
