Description

Assigned the Wexler designation 2005-P 25c OR WDDR-012, this Philadelphia Mint Oregon State Quarter doubled die reverse documents a hub misalignment during die preparation that left visible doubling on the reverse design. The Oregon State Quarter, released in 2005 as part of the fifty-state commemorative quarter program, features a depiction of Crater Lake National Park — the lake formed in the caldera of the collapsed Mount Mazama volcano. The reverse design's detailed landscape of the lake, Wizard Island, and surrounding crater rim provided ample design elements for hub displacement to affect during die sinking. Oregon was one of five states honored in 2005 alongside Kansas, West Virginia, Minnesota, and California. The Wexler Team's attribution adds this variety to the growing census of doubled dies across the state quarter series, where annually changing reverse designs created fifty distinct canvases for die variety researchers to examine.
