2005 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

Catalogued in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 2005-P 25c OR WDDR-009 and cross-referenced as CONECA 11-R-VIII, this Oregon State Quarter shows its doubling on the underside of the right end of Wizard Island — the distinctive volcanic cinder cone at the center of Crater Lake depicted on the coin's reverse. The Class 11 designation and VIII die-to-die angle confirm the doubling is measurable and consistent. Obverse die markers include a strong horizontal die scratch through the top inside of the O in OF, and a die scratch through the top of the A in QUARTER. Reverse markers concentrate in the tree-laden landscape: a die gouge sits to the left of the tree north of the 2 in the date; a small die gouge appears to the left of the bottom of the left tall tree; and a die gouge occupies the field between the lower branches of the two tall trees. America the Beautiful State Quarters were clad coinage struck at Philadelphia and Denver.
